In June 2011, the Magnificat Maternal Health Project, a working group of Maternal Life International (MLI) USA, was formed to improve maternal health care in rural Idah, Nigeria, a region which lacks many basic medical resources and subsequently has one of the highest incidences of maternal and newborn deaths in the country. We do not go about this alone. We align our cause with Mary’s Magnificat, a prayer that cooperates in a unique way with the Father’s plan before the incarnation of God and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. In that prayer Mary says:
- “My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” Inspired by these words, we joyfully and humbly dedicate ourselves to reducing maternal and newborn deaths through life-saving obstetrical care.
- “He has exalted the lowly and filled the hungry with good things.” Mary has walked the road of suffering: the proclamation that a sword would pierce her heart, the flight to Egypt to avoid the slaughter of The Innocents, the passion and death of her Son. She remains ever close to the heart of those who suffer. We look to Mary, most faithful witness to her Son Jesus, invoking her intercession for mothers who suffer and die in giving birth, for unborn children whose lives are not fully valued, for families who bear the cross of poverty, sickness and death.
- “Mindful of his mercy,” we look to that day, here and yet to come, when the healing hand of Jesus touches all who are broken in flesh or spirit.
